What are Cantonese conjunctions, or conjunctions in general?
You might know conjunctions by another name: linking words. They’re words like “and”, “but”, “or” that link two standalone phrases together, while showing a particular relationship between these phrases.
Do not underestimate the power of conjunctions. At a higher level when you’re concerned with speaking well, using Cantonese conjunctions correctly will be the difference between speaking coherently or not.
And in no particular order, here are 57 of the most commonly seen / used Cantonese conjunctions, along with, of course, plenty of sample sentences to boot.
Why I presented Cantonese conjunctions this way
This could easily have been spread into 57 separate lessons for a lesson in languages like Japanese or Korean. For Cantonese, however, the lack of the notion of “conjugation” really makes it difficult to justify so many separate lessons for what’s obviously a unified class of words.
In many cases, especially from now on, (since you guys are no longer beginners), you’ll really start to feel the distinction between “grammar” / “structures” and “vocabulary” blur considerably.
But don’t worry about it – as long as you keep learning about these fundamental building blocks of Cantonese, you can be assured that you’re making definite progress towards fluency.
At this point, I would also encourage you to start exposing yourself to more authentic Cantonese media. While listening to the news might still be a bit tough, this would be the point I’d start to recommend watching TV series, especially family themed ones like 愛回家, which, as of this writing, spans a mega series of over 1355 episodes at 20 minutes in length each.
While it may seem like a stretch to go this far just to “strengthen your fundamentals”, I can assure you that if you consolidate your understanding of these basic structures with natural, real life examples, you’ll soon start to attune your mind to situations where these expressions naturally pop up, and develop an intuition for how to use these building blocks correctly – none of which is “teachable” – this is something you’ll have to develop yourself.
Once again, don’t worry – this is a marathon, not a sprint! As long as you’re enjoying the content you’re using (hopefully beyond what you’re learning here at Cantolounge), and you’re enjoying the Cantonese language, you can’t go wrong.
I hope you have a cup of coffee ready in front of you (if you drink coffee), because this is going to be a long ride!
Okay, enough chit chat, let’s get started.
*Note: I realize that there are a few words that wouldn’t ordinarily be listed as “Cantonese conjunctions”, but I threw them in there anyway, because I feel that this set of words are used very often in Cantonese, and there’s value in including them and sharing some cool examples.

Cantonese conjunction #5: 但係、不過 daan6 hai6 / bat1 gwo3 but
但係 / 不過 + phrase
As you can see, I’ve listed two words for but here. In the sense of the word “but”, I don’t think there are any differences between the two, and it’s okay to treat them interchangeably. However, do note that 不過, when compounded with other words, or when used for other purposes other than “but” has applications that do NOT overlap with 但係.

Cantonese conjunction #6: 同…都冇、冇…亦都冇 tung4…dou1 mou5, mou5…jik6 dou1 mou5 neither…nor
“Neither…nor” isn’t a fixed construct like in English (as in something you’d explicitly see in a grammar book), rather it’s something we piece together with other words. I’ve listed two ways to translate “neither…nor”, and you can feel free to use them interchangeably. Note the difference in construction.
object 1 + 同 + object 2 + 都冇 + verb

Conclusion
And once again, we’ve come to the end of another lesson, this time with Cantonese conjunctions.
Before we close today, I want to talk a little bit about something a few readers have been asking over the past few months: “what’s with the increase in difficulty with the example sentences?”
In an attempt to try and lay out the basic building blocks of Cantonese grammar in a coherent manner, the points we’re going to touch upon are going to be used in increasingly complex ways, that often can’t be illustrated well with sentences like “I eat sheep” and “the sky is blue”.
But more importantly, you should be excited – the fact that the sentences are growing more complex and you’re sticking through to the end of each lesson means that your understanding of Cantonese is growing as well! By taking the time to deconstruct longer sentences, and get used to examples like these, chances are, you’re going to be better prepared in real life when you encounter someone using these building blocks, or when you have to use them.
To top that off, while I’ve set out to write a series of lessons on “Cantonese grammar”, I don’t really look at this as grammar. Grammar is dry and full of rules that are impossible to remember. By shifting our focus to lively, interesting (I hope they’re interesting!) examples, it really breathes life and authenticity to learning the Cantonese basics, and hopefully adds to that stickiness in the learning journey.
So there you are! My reasons for weaving complexity into these sample sentences as we go along. I’m not doing them to make it deliberately hard (there are translations throughout to help you), this is just what I feel is best for you, the student, in terms of presentation.
For this lesson in particular, I would highly encourage you to pick a few Cantonese conjunctions you find interesting, and write out a few sentences of your own. And if you’re ever stuck, don’t forget to reach out! I’ll do my best to respond.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson on Cantonese conjunctions, please come back for the next Cantonese lesson in the series!
各位同學繼續努力,加油!
